Five Train Rides from Bruges That Take Under an Hour

Belgium is small and its rail network is dense. From Bruges station, you can reach half a dozen interesting destinations in under an hour.

    1. Ghent (25 minutes): University city, Gravensteen castle, the Ghent Altarpiece. More dynamic and less touristy than Bruges. Trains every 15 minutes.

    2. Brussels (60 minutes): The capital. Grand Place, Magritte Museum, Manneken Pis, the EU quarter. Trains every 30 minutes.

    3. Ostend (15 minutes): Seaside city with a fish market, Mu.ZEE art museum, and the longest seafront promenade in Belgium. Trains every 20 minutes.

    4. Antwerp (90 minutes): Fashion capital of Belgium. The station alone is worth the trip — it's one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world. Rubens' house, the diamond quarter, and MAS museum. Change at Ghent.

    5. Kortrijk (35 minutes): Often overlooked, but this small Flemish city has a lovely old centre, the Beguinage (UNESCO), and the Texture museum about the linen industry.

Belgian rail tips: A day return (dagretour) is significantly cheaper than two single tickets. The NMBS app is reliable for timetables and mobile tickets. Weekend returns are 50% off. Trains run roughly 5am-midnight.

All these destinations are compact enough for a half-day or full-day trip. Leave in the morning, explore, have lunch, and be back in Bruges for dinner.
