Bruges Through the Seasons: A Photographer's Calendar

Bruges is photogenic year-round, but each season offers different subjects and light.

Spring (March-May): Daffodils in the Begijnhof, cherry blossoms at Minnewater, magnolias in the Astridpark. The light is clean and angled. Best for: flowers, fresh green canals, the Belfry against blue sky.

Summer (June-August): Long golden evenings, busy terraces, boats on the canals. The sun doesn't set until after 10pm in June. Best for: sunset shots from the Rozenhoedkaai, canal reflections in evening light, street life.

Autumn (September-November): Golden and amber foliage along the ramparts, mist on the canals, quiet streets. The tourist crowds thin out. Best for: fog shots at dawn, autumn colours reflected in canals, moody architecture.

Winter (December-February): Christmas market lights, frost on cobblestones, bare trees revealing the skyline. Low sun creates dramatic shadows even at midday. Best for: night photography, Christmas atmosphere, architectural details.

The single best moment for photography in Bruges: a foggy morning in November, about 30 minutes after sunrise, on the Groenerei canal. The combination of mist, golden light, dark water, and medieval buildings creates images that look painted.

The worst time for photography: midday in July. Harsh overhead light, massive crowds, and every angle has someone's selfie stick in it.

Gear suggestions: A good smartphone will capture most of Bruges beautifully. For serious work, bring a 24-70mm zoom and a tripod for low-light and long exposure.
