Bruges with Your Dog: A Pet-Friendly City Guide

Belgium loves dogs. They're welcome in most cafés and restaurants, on public transport, and in many hotels. Bruges is particularly accommodating — you'll see dogs on terraces, in shops, and walking the cobblestones alongside their owners.

The rampart parks around the city are ideal for dog walking — open green spaces along the old moats where dogs can run. The stretch between the Kruispoort and Dampoort is popular with local dog owners.

The canal path to Damme is a great dog-friendly walk or ride. The path is wide, there's water access at several points, and Damme itself has café terraces where dogs are welcome.

Most restaurants in Bruges welcome dogs, especially on terraces. It's polite to ask, but you'll rarely be refused. Water bowls appear without being asked at most establishments.

Canal boat tours: Dogs are generally allowed on the public canal boats, though check with the specific operator. Smaller dogs are easier than larger ones on the narrow seats.

Museums: Most museums do not allow dogs (assistance dogs excepted). The outdoor markets, parks, and streets are the dog-friendly parts of Bruges.

Belgian law requires dogs to be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. If you're travelling from another EU country, bring the EU Pet Passport. From the UK, the requirements are slightly more complex post-Brexit — check the UK government website for current rules.

Dog-friendly accommodation: Many hotels and B&Bs accept dogs, sometimes with a small surcharge. Always mention your dog when booking.
