Bruges Beyond the Centre: Parks and Green Escapes

The medieval centre of Bruges is compact — you can walk across it in 15 minutes. But surrounding it is a ring of parks, ramparts, and green spaces that most tourists never discover.

The old city ramparts (vesten) form a green belt around the entire city. You can walk or cycle the complete circuit in about an hour. Parts are tree-lined paths along the old moats, with swans, ducks, and the occasional heron. The stretch between the Gentpoort and the Kruispoort is the prettiest.

The Koningin Astridpark (Queen Astrid Park) near the station has exotic trees, a pond with a fountain, and benches that face away from the street noise. It was designed as an English landscape garden in the 19th century.

Tillegem Castle Park is about 3km south of the centre — a 20-minute bike ride. The castle itself isn't open to visitors, but the surrounding forest and lake are beautiful for a walk. There's a small café in the old farm buildings.

Tudor City Park is even further out but worth it for a half-day escape. It's a former estate with walking trails through woodland and meadows.

Back in the centre, the gardens behind the Gruuthuse Museum are a small but perfectly maintained space with views of the Church of Our Lady. They're one of Bruges' best-kept secrets.
